Saw a big title today, written ZERO EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRADUATES”.

Mourning and sorrowing have flooded the internet page. I am wondering are graduates so happy to be under employ?

People have been thinking is very sad if a person can’t get a job.

But no one explains to us that we are sad not because of no job, we are sad because we have no income/money. Employment is not the only thing you can generate income, you can earn it from working part-time, starting a small trading business or become a service freelancer.

Let me share my story

I graduated in 2015 as a double degree holder and apply to work in Big 4 Company as an audit associate. When I first started, my pay was RM 2,800 and increase to RM 3,200 after a year. Is good to receive pay initially, but soon I realise my money seem to disappear magically fast.

After paying for rental (RM 750), car instalment (RM 500), food (RM 600), mobile fee (RM 100), utilities (RM 30), petrol fee (RM 200), insurance (RM 100) and entertainment (RM 100). I left only RM 112 SAVINGS a month.

I did my part like anyone else wishes, go to a big firm and work to get experience. Is this the employment you are looking for? Definitely not for me.

After 2 years of experience, I decided to resign. I repay my study fees about RM 13,000 with my savings since young, leaving myself with total net cash of around RM 5,000. Bought a laptop and purchased an accounting system, look for outsource accounting work and build it up till now.

I started my business like most of the business owner when we have nothing. I have but only faith and courage to fall. I am very appreciative and feel super lucky that I am able to sustain through this, thanks to the decision I made 2 years ago.

Starting a business is not easy, build it up steadily and you can have control of the life you want. Crisis could be bad but will not endanger your company if you have proper management.

Is employment really WORTH IT?

Employment guarantee nothing. A crisis like Covid-19 could bring everything seems to be yours away. You have to go, you have to go......

Have you imagined where will you be, if you are under employment now?

If your company have retrenchment, the best you can hope for is that you keep your job. Be prepared for additional workload because work will be allocated to those remained. You might even feel grateful to be able to do more because you still get your job. But this does not mean you will definitely get your pay.

If you are retrenched, you are terrifying and desperate for a job. Forced to take much lower pay job, lost the opportunity to build your market and have no right to choices. Isn’t this much more disappointing?

Now you really have nothing but probably loans.

Many told themselves that we are doing this for experience, and once I know about the operation, I can start doing my business. Studies show that people learn when they are in the managing position to see the big picture because they need to be responsible. With employment from the low level, we are very much a workhorse. After years we climb the corporate ladder, we might have lost our passion to start our own business.

"You are trading your time and opportunity for salary."

ZERO EMPLOYMENT = BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY?

People are worry as the market expectation for unemployment will be very high.

Take it as a yes, what is your next step?

Since the current situation of “Zero Employment” and “Resign for Entrepreneurship” make not much difference, shall we start a business now? OF COURSE YES

If I am certain that looking for a job will be very difficult, I would like to try on with business and gain some experience. I always encourage people to start by getting a few year experiences in corporate, then go into business before you are stuck in the comfort zone. If the situation does not allow, make the best available decision, whether to start freelance business or trading. Good to gain some experience rather than sitting down and wait for good things to drop.

Many have been forced to start a business after retrenchment, they survive and success because they are responsible for themselves and their family, they are doing everything they can to feed them well.

We are the same, we started with nothing and we could survive and slowly expand. Worry less for what is coming, problems have to be solved anyway, brace up and make the decision.
